SOCIAL WORK
School social work is a specialized area of practice within the broad field of the social work profession. School social workers bring unique knowledge and skills to the school system and the student services team. They strive to further the mission of the schools to provide a safe setting for teaching, learning, and for the attainment of competence and confidence.
The school social workerconducts social/emotional assessments for individualized education plan evaluations. Assessments used may include social histories (obtained via parent interview and/or parent questionnaire) and formal assessments that measure adaptive abilities, social functioning, and social/emotional concerns like depression, anxiety, anger, or attention difficulties..
The school social worker serves as a liaison to connect families to resources as well as to explain the special education process. The school social worker may address emotional and social concerns by consulting with school staff, assisting in development of behavior plans, making community referrals, or providing direct services as determined by the IEP team.
